Over the past two decades, Malaysia became an emerging migration destination for South Korean individuals and families. Such migrants are said to be attracted to Malaysia’s bilingual education, lower costs of education and living, geographical proximity to South Korea, and slower pace of life. Existing studies have found that the presence of migration schemes such as the Malaysia My Second Home visa programme (MM2H) and regional development initiatives such as the Iskandar Malaysia regional development plans have facilitated the speculative migration of Chinese and Japanese educational and lifestyle migrants to Johor Bahru. However, there is as yet little updated research on Korean families’ educational migration to other destinations in Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur. This study addresses this research gap by examining why and how Korean families partake in educational and lifestyle migration to Kuala Lumpur.
